Designing with Hemp-Based Materials for High-Performance, Regenerative Buildings

This introductory AIA‐accredited course equips design professionals with the fundamentals of specifying and detailing industrial hemp–based building materials such as hemp-lime (“hempcrete”), hemp fiber insulation, and prefabricated blocks/panels for new construction and retrofit projects. Framed through Health, Safety, and Welfare, the session covers hygrothermal behavior (vapor-open, moisture-managing assemblies), fire performance, acoustic attenuation, thermal comfort, and embodied-carbon impacts. Participants will compare common assembly types (cast-in-place infill, blocks, and panels), review best practices for framing interfaces, air and water control layers, finishes, and MEP

Participants will learn:

  • Moisture management and hygrothermal control

  • Fire safety and thermal performance

  • Indoor air quality and embodied carbon reduction

  • Real-world case studies in new construction and retrofits

Organic Hemp-Based Wood Flooring and Designs

This introductory AIA‐accredited course introduces design professionals to the beauty, performance, and sustainability of organic hemp-based wood flooring and lumber products. Participants will explore how these materials contribute to healthier indoor environments, meet sustainability goals, and align with carbon-negative manufacturing practices. The course also examines product composition, installation considerations, and LEED certification opportunities for both residential and commercial projects.

Participants will learn:

  • How to design with organic hemp-based wood flooring materials

  • How hemp-based flooring supports indoor air quality

  • The composition and performance benefits of hemp-based wood and lumber products

  • The principles of no-VOC, carbon-negative manufacturing
